Hyacinthoides non‑scripta

A beloved, perennial woodland bulb with deep violet‑blue bells that carpet shady areas in spring. Looks lovely paired with wood sorrel or wild garlic in a cool, dappled patch.

🌿 Spreading habit: Spreads steadily by bulbs and self‑seeding; can naturalise into large drifts

🌿 Sun needs: Partial shade, Full shade

🌿 Pet & Child friendliness: Unsafe – all parts contain mild toxins that can cause severe digestive upset if eaten.

🌿 Pollen Level: Low*

Care: Prefers moist, Loamy soil and thrives under deciduous trees where it receives spring light and summer shade, but can do well in any shady spot. Water during prolonged dry spells in its first year. Allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulbs. To control spread, lift and thin bulbs every few years.

Fun Fact: The sticky sap of bluebells was once used in bookbinding and to attach feathers to arrows.
