Agrimonia eupatoria
Common Agrimony is a graceful UK‑native perennial with tall, slender spikes of bright yellow, sweetly scented flowers that rise above soft, divided leaves. Its airy structure adds height without heaviness, making it perfect for cottage gardens, wildlife borders, and naturalistic plantings. It pairs beautifully with Meadowsweet and Betony, both of which are also available in our store and are pet-friendly. This excellent flower is a butterfly saviour, as it is a larval food plant of the vulnerable Grizzled Skipper butterfly.
🌿 Full Sun, Part Sun
🌿 Pet Friendly
🌿 Medium Pollen
🌿 Growth Habit: Returns each year; spreads gently by seed
🌿 Large flower; Height & Spread = 60–100 cm tall × 30–45 cm wide
🌿 Wildlife Value: Excellent for bees and hoverflies, and its seeds provide food for small birds later in the season.
Care: Common Agrimony thrives in well-drained soil, from light sandy soils to average loam. Prefers full sun but tolerates part sun. Water during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first year. Suitable for medium to large pots with a minimum depth and diameter of 25–30 cm to support its tall flowering stems. When planting in the ground, leave around 40 cm of space to allow the plant to develop its upright form. It self-seeds lightly; removing spent flower spikes before seed pods form will reduce spread. Dies back in winter and returns reliably in spring.
Allergen Information: Medium pollen. Flowers from June to August, with pollen levels highest in midsummer. Individual sensitivities can vary and may develop over time. Pocket Wilds accepts no responsibility for any allergic reaction.
Pet Safety Notice: “Pet Friendly” means this plant is generally considered safe to be touched, sniffed, or lightly ingested by dogs and cats; however, no plant should be deliberately eaten in large quantities, as digestive upset may occur if it’s unfamiliar to the body. Individual allergies or sensitivities can also develop at any time, so Pocket Wilds always suggests supervision when introducing new plants to curious hands, paws, or mouths.
Fun Fact: In English folklore, Agrimony was believed to have sleep‑bringing powers. It was said that placing the plant under a person’s pillow would keep them in a deep slumber until it was removed — a charming myth with no basis in reality, but one that reflects the plant’s long cultural history.
