Knautia arvensisA clump-forming perennial with pincushion-like heads of lilac-blue florets atop slender stems and deeply divided, grey-green foliage. Thrives in full sun to part sun on well-draining soils—perfect for meadow edges, wildflower borders, or cottage gardens where it pairs beautifully with Prunella vulgaris (Selfheal), Achillea millefolium (Yarrow), and Agrimonia eupatoria (Common Agrimony)—all pet-friendly companions sharing its love of sunny, moderately fertile sites. In folklore, field scabious was believed to cure rabies when carried as an amulet.

Care: Prefers moderately fertile, well-draining soil. Water regularly during establishment, then moderately—allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings but avoid prolonged drought. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering and encourage tidier growth. A light top-dressing of compost in early spring supports vigorous shoot and flower production. Thrives in-ground; in containers, choose a pot at least 8 inches deep with good drainage.
Allergen Information: Low allergy risk—blooms June–September. Produces minimal pollen but attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; individual sensitivities may vary and can develop over time.
Pet Safety Notice: “Pet Friendly” means this plant is generally considered safe to be touched, sniffed, or ingested by dogs, cats, and rabbits. No plant should be deliberately eaten in large quantities, as digestive upset may occur if it’s unfamiliar to the body. Individual allergies or sensitivities can develop, so Pocket Wilds always suggests supervision when introducing new plants to curious hands, paws, or mouths.
* Edible Parts & Preparation: Young leaves and petals—harvest in summer and use sparingly in salads for a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Flower heads can be steeped as a gentle herbal tea; avoid cooking to preserve delicate aromas.
