Scabiosa columbaria
A delicate, long‑flowering perennial with soft lilac pincushion blooms that attract bees and butterflies from midsummer into autumn. Looks lovely paired with meadow cranesbill or birds-foot-trefoil in a sunny, open patch.
🌿 Size: 12–24 inches tall
🌿 Spreading habit: Forms neat clumps; spreads lightly by seed, never invasive
🌿 Sun needs: Full sun
🌿 Pet & Child friendliness: Safe*
🌿 Pollen Level: Medium*
Care: Prefers well‑drained chalky or sandy soil but can also do well on clay, provided it's had drainage improved or isn't very heavy, and thrives in meadows, dry borders, and wildlife or cottage gardens. Water during its first year and in prolonged drought. Deadhead to prolong flowering or leave some seedheads for structure and wildlife. Cut back in late autumn or early spring to refresh growth.
Fun Fact: The name “scabious” comes from its historic use in treating skin conditions - though today it’s prized mainly for its pollinator power.
