Ajuga reptansA vigorous evergreen groundcover with glossy foliage and short spikes of blue flowers in spring. Ideal for part-sun borders, shady rockeries, or under trees where it pairs beautifully with Melittis melissophyllum (Bastard Balm), Bird’s-foot Trefoil, and Field Forget-me-not—all of which are pet-friendly and thrive in similar conditions. Historically known as “Carpet Bugle,” it was once planted between stepping stones to suppress weeds.

Care: Thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Water regularly during dry spells to keep soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. A light top-dressing of compost in early spring encourages fresh growth. Performs well in containers—choose pots at least 8 inches deep to accommodate its spreading habit.
Allergen Information: Low allergy risk—blooms April–May. Though not a heavy pollen producer, it does attract pollinators such as bees. Individual sensitivities can vary and may develop over time.
