Stellaria media

A delicate annual groundcover with small white star-shaped flowers and soft green leaves. Thrives in part-sun to shady, moist spots—perfect for border edges, under shrubs, or in containers kept out of harsh midday sun. Pairs beautifully with Melittis melissophyllum (Bastard Balm), Ajuga reptans (Bugle), and Lotus corniculatus (Bird’s-foot Trefoil), all of which share its love for moist, sheltered conditions and are pet-friendly. Historically, chickweed was used in folk medicine to soothe skin irritations and as a nutritious forage for poultry.

Care: Prefers rich, loamy soil with good moisture retention. Keep soil consistently damp—water lightly every few days or as needed to prevent drying out, especially in containers. No regular fertilizer needed if soil is fertile; a light mulch of compost in spring can boost vigor. Can be grown in pots (choose at least 6 inches deep) or as a living mulch in garden beds.

Allergen Information: Low allergy risk—blooms February–September. While it produces minimal pollen, it can attract bees. Individual sensitivities vary and may develop over time.

Pet Safety Notice: “Pet Friendly” means this plant is generally considered safe to be touched, sniffed, or ingested by dogs, cats, and rabbits. No plant should be deliberately eaten in large quantities, as digestive upset may occur if it’s unfamiliar to the body. Individual allergies or sensitivities can develop, so Pocket Wilds always suggests supervision when introducing new plants to curious hands, paws, or mouths.

* Edible Parts & Preparation: Young leaves and shoots—harvest fresh and use raw in salads, sandwiches, or pesto; can also be lightly steamed or added to soups as a nourishing green. Avoid cooking excessively to preserve its mild, spinach-like flavor.
