Rumex acetosa

A vigorous perennial with arrow-shaped green leaves and delicate panicles of reddish-green flowers. Thrives in full sun to part sun on moist, well-draining soils—ideal for cottage gardens, herb beds, or sunny borders where it pairs beautifully with Leucanthemum vulgare (Common Daisy), Myosotis arvensis (Field Forget-me-not), and Fragaria vesca (Wild Strawberry). Historically, common sorrel was prized in medieval cuisine for its tangy, lemony flavor in soups and sauces.

Care: Prefers rich, moist, well-draining soil high in organic matter. Water regularly to maintain even moisture—avoid both drought stress and waterlogging. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring to support lush leaf growth. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigor. In containers, choose a pot at least 8 inches deep with good drainage and keep soil consistently damp.

Allergen Information: Low allergy risk—blooms May–July. Produces minimal pollen but attracts bees; individual sensitivities may vary and can develop over time.

Pet Safety Notice: “Pet Friendly” means this plant is generally considered safe to be touched, sniffed, or ingested by dogs, cats, and rabbits. No plant should be deliberately eaten in large quantities, as digestive upset may occur if it’s unfamiliar to the body. Individual allergies or sensitivities can develop, so Pocket Wilds always suggests supervision when introducing new plants to curious hands, paws, or mouths.

* Edible Parts & Preparation: Young leaves—harvest fresh and use raw in salads or sandwiches for a bright, lemony flavor. Leaves can also be lightly cooked into soups, quiches, or sauces; avoid overcooking to preserve their tangy taste.
