Trifolium pratense

A robust perennial with clusters of rosy-pink, pea-like flowers atop upright stems and trifoliate leaves. Thrives in full sun to part sun on moist, well-draining soils—ideal for meadow plantings, pollinator borders, or grassy banks where it pairs harmoniously with Trifolium repens (White Clover), Achillea millefolium (Yarrow), and Fragaria vesca (Wild Strawberry). Red Clover is valued for its nitrogen-fixing ability and benefits bees and has been used in traditional herbal teas and salads.

Care: Prefers fertile, moist, well-draining soil. Water regularly during establishment, then moderately—allowing topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. No routine fertiliser needed if soil is rich; a top-dressing of compost in spring can boost vigour. Self-seeds; remove spent heads to control spread. Thrives in-ground or in 8-inch pots with consistent moisture.

Allergen Information: Low allergy risk—blooms May–September. Produces minimal pollen but attracts bees and butterflies; individual sensitivities may vary.

Pet Safety Notice: “Pet Friendly” means this plant is generally considered safe to be touched, sniffed, or ingested by dogs, cats, and rabbits. Digestive upset may occur if eaten in large quantities, especially if unfamiliar to the body. Individual allergies or sensitivities can develop, so Pocket Wilds always suggests supervision when introducing new plants to curious hands, paws, or mouths.

* Edible Parts & Preparation: Flower heads and young leaves—harvest fresh and use in salads or as a garnish; dried flowers can be infused into teas for a mild, sweet flavour.
