Thymus vulgaris

A hardy, low-growing evergreen shrublet with aromatic, grey-green leaves and clusters of tiny pink to mauve flowers in early summer—perfect for herb gardens, rockeries, or edging pathways. It pairs delightfully with Ocimum basilicum (Basil) for a sweet contrast; Salvia rosmarinus (Rosemary) for complementary woody structure; and Origanum vulgare (Oregano) to complete the classic Mediterranean trio. In ancient Greece, thyme garlands were burned as incense in temples to purify the air and honour the gods.

Size & Growth: Matures at 10–20 cm tall × 30–40 cm wide; slow spread of ~5 cm/year via creeping stems. Responds well to light trimming after flowering to maintain compact habit.

Care: Prefers sharply drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun. Water sparingly—allow soil to dry between waterings. Pinch back flowered stems to promote new growth. Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser. In containers, use a pot at least 20 cm diameter (5 L) with free-draining compost; move under cover if frost is severe.

Allergen Information: Low allergy risk—blooms May–July; produces minimal pollen but attracts bees; individual sensitivities may develop over time.

Pet Safety Notice: “Pet Friendly” means this plant is generally considered safe to be touched, sniffed, or ingested by dogs, cats, and rabbits in moderation. Digestive upset may occur if eaten in large quantities or if unfamiliar to the body, so supervision is advised for curious pets.

* Edible Parts & Preparation: Leaves—harvest fresh or dry for seasoning soups, stews, and roasts; steep in hot water for a fragrant herbal infusion; use sparingly to avoid overpowering dishes.
